Help Caring for Aging Parents

Did you feel the moment you shifted from your parents' child to their caregiver?

Stacy got the call just as she was picking up the kids from school. Her mom was in the hospital after a fall at home. The next week was a constant juggle of visiting the hospital during the day, then homework and soccer practices with her kids each afternoon. During consultations with doctors, it became apparent that Stacy's mom would not be able to return to her own apartment. As Stacy began research assisted living options, she could feel a sudden shift from child to caregiver. She had officially joined the ranks of the "Sandwich Generation:, 30- or 40-somethings who are responsible for raising their own children while also caring for their aging parents.

Some people might not relate to the word "caregiver", even though they regularly care for a sick or disabled parent, child or spouse. Many people just view it as part of their familial obligation. However, a caregiver can be any unpaid family member who supports a loved one physically, emotionally, financially and/or by making decisions affecting their well-being. Taking on the responsibility of caring for a loved one can challenge the dynamics of the relationship and can impact the caregiver's emotional and physical health as well.

If you hare a family caregiver, we invite you to join us for a free workshop in North County on March 10. The Caregiver Coalition of San Diego in collaboration with Jewish Family Service of San Diego will discuss not only how to manage difficult conversations, resolve legal matters and plan proactively, but also how to reduce caregiver stress. The event includes a resource fair to learn more about the options currently available for caregivers in our community. A light breakfast will be provided.
