Sun safety tips for this weekend’s air show

To fully enjoy the California Capital Airshow this weekend, protect yourself from sunburns and skin cancer. Air show visitors are encouraged to apply free sunscreen provided at the Kaiser Permanente Sunscreen Bar. The Sunscreen Bar, which is stocked with gallon-size sunscreen pumps, is located at the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Booth near the Governor’s Club in the exhibitor row area.

“Being safe doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy being outdoors,” said Dr. Christine Doherty, a Kaiser Permanente dermatologist. “It simply means that you must be smart about protecting your skin.”

  • Wear clothing that protects you from the sun – a wide-brimmed hat, long pants, sunglasses, and long sleeved shirts.

  • Apply sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Look for all of these terms (UVA, UVB, and SPF) on the label of your sunscreen.

  • Be sure to apply a good amount of sunscreen to you and your child. Most sunscreens need to be reapplied every two to three hours as well as immediately after swimming or heavy exercise (sweating).

  • Use extra precaution when the sun’s rays are the strongest, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and seek shade whenever possible.

Remember: Most skin cancer can be prevented by avoiding too much sun. By the time you are 20 years old, you have gotten as much as 80 percent of your lifetime sun exposure, so keep your children protected from the sun.

In addition to providing sunscreen, the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Booth also will be handing out ear plugs. Kaiser Permanente is a Platinum Sponsor of the California Capital Airshow.
