After 25 Years, Foster City's Police Chief is Retiring
Chief Matt Martell joined the department in 1990 and worked his way up through the ranks.

FOSTER CITY, CA- Foster City’s police chief announced his retirement this week after 25 years with the department and nearly four years as chief.
Chief Matt Martell joined the department in 1990 and worked his way up through the ranks until he was appointed chief in 2012. He said Wednesday he would retire on April 1.
“It’s been an honor and privilege to serve this community as part of a phenomenal team,” Martell said in a statement. “I have had a great career, been part of a great community and worked at FCPD with some of the best police officers anywhere.”

Martell started his career in the U.S. Army as a military police officer before joining the Antioch Police Department in 1987. He joined the Foster City department a few years later.
City manager Kevin Miller said in a statement, “Foster City has had no finer department and community leader than Matt.”

“He has dedicated his service to Foster City to create not only a safe place to live, work and play, but also a place where community character, culture and cohesiveness create an unparalleled quality of life,” Miller said.
The city’s next police chief will be promoted from within the department, city officials said.
