Foster City-Based Biotech Company Breaks Ground on Massive New Lab
$140 million, 193,000 square foot facility will accommodate up to 275 employees.

A Foster City-based biotech giant on Wednesday held a groundbreaking ceremony for an expansive $140 million, 193,000 square-foot research lab building.
Gilead Sciences was founded in Foster City in 1987 and is considered a world leader in the development of treatments for life-threatening illnesses including HIV/AIDS, cancer, and liver disease.
The facility will accommodate up to 275 employees, including research scientists.

Foster City Mayor Linda Koelling, U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Spears (D-San Mateo), and State Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) were among those who attended Wednesday’s groundbreaking event.
“This new research building will support Gilead’s growth well into the future as we continue to discover and develop novel medications for patients with unmet medical needs,” Gilead spokesman Nathan Kaiser told Patch.
