Foster City Teen Among 8 Hospitalized In Major Crash

California Highway Patrol officials say all eight of the boys were in the same 1997 Toyota 4Runner.

SAN MATEO, CA — California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a weekend crash that sent eight local teenagers to the hospital. Three of those involved were not wearing a seatbelt and were subsequently ejected from the SUV when it overturned, according to CHP Officer Art Montiel. Though seven people suffered major injuries, all involved were expected to survive as of Monday afternoon.

Montiel says the crash happened late Saturday night, just before midnight, as the boys were headed east on state Highway 92 in San Mateo "when the driver lost control of the Toyota causing it to overturn" near De Anza Boulevard.

"Three of the eight male teenage passengers were ejected from the Toyota as they were not wearing their seatbelt (including a 15-year-old that was traveling in the cargo area of the Toyota)," Montiel said in a news release.

Everyone in the vehicle was hospitalized. Six of those in the 4Runner are 16 years old, one person is 15 and the driver is 17, Montiel said. Everyone lives in San Mateo, except for one of the 16-year-olds,

"The driver suffered minor injuries but the rest of the teenagers all sustained major injuries as a result of this collision," the CHP officer said. "All eight teenagers were transported to Stanford Medical Center for treatment."

CHP officials said it appears alcohol and drugs played no part in the crash. The roadway in the area was closed for about two hours following the wreck.

Any witnesses to the crash are asked to call Officer Anthony Wheeler at (650) 369-6261.
