FOSTER CITY, CA — Nearly 200 drivers were pulled over in San Mateo and Foster City on Wednesday, as law enforcement officers fanned out across the two municipalities looking for traffic offenders. Police say it was part of their latest Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP, initiative which is a "collaborative effort to increase traffic safety and awareness in known trouble spots throughout San Mateo County."
According to police, they made more than 190 stops in the two towns. From those, 160 tickets were given. Police said those citations included the following:
- 104 citations were issued for cell phone violations
- 9 citations were issued for unsafe speed
- 11 citations were issued for stop sign violations
- 26 citations were issued for unsafe turning movements
- 4 citations were issued for seatbelt violations
"The participating officers remained committed to making a high volume of traffic stops in this coordinated saturation, while maintaining the highest levels of community awareness and professionalism," police said. "The number of stops and citations during this most recent deployment reflect a sustained enthusiasm for this program and traffic safety on the Peninsula."
