ACE Train Passengers Evacuated After Mudslide Stalls Train

The mudslide happened in Niles Canyon where Highway 84 has been closed for days because of ongoing rockfall and mudslides.

FREMONT, CA — Passengers of a westbound Altamont Corridor Express train were evacuated Tuesday morning after the train got stuck due to a mudslide in Niles Canyon.

The train did not derail and there were no injuries among the train’s crew or 220 passengers. according to county fire officials.

The train stopped at around 8:45 a.m. after a roughly 100-foot mudslide blocked the tracks.

At about noon, a second train was sent to retrieve the passengers by pulling the stalled train back to Pleasanton.

Union Pacific and fire crews are inspecting and clearing the tracks, West said.

State Highway 84 through Niles Canyon has been shut down and reopened repeatedly over the past few weeks due to landslides. On Saturday, the route, also known as Niles Canyon Road, was closed in both directions from Old Canyon Road to Silver Springs Road in Fremont due to mudslides and flooding.
