Authorities ID Motorcylcist Killed In Fremont Crash

Police also revealed new details about what led up to the crash.

FREMONT, CA — Authorities say they have identified a motorcyclist who died in a crash with a pickup truck in Fremont on Monday afternoon.

The Fremont Police Department identified the motorcyclist as 49-year-old Andrew Barrett Mackenzie of San Jose.

Mackenzie was riding his motorcycle eastbound on Cushing Parkway and tried to squeeze between a construction zone and a pickup truck when he was side swept, police said.

"As the traffic signal turned green for eastbound vehicles, the motorcyclist arrived at the limit line and accelerated to pass on the passenger side of the truck," police said in a statement Wednesday. "The spacing was limited due to the construction zone. The motorcyclist hit a few traffic cones and attempted to merge into the #1 lane."

The impact caused Mackenzie to lose control and fall to the ground, where he was struck by the rear passenger tire of the truck, police said.

Although police say Mackenzie was wearing a helmet, he appears to have suffered major injuries in the crash. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died about an hour later, police said.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured. They remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Police are still investigating the crash. At this time, investigators believe drug or alcohol impairment was not a factor in the crash.

This marked the second fatal traffic crash in Fremont this year. A cyclist died earlier this month after colliding with a semi-truck while trying to enter a parking lot.
