The 'Da Vinci Glow': Photo Of The Day

Praveen Bhatia demonstrates his patience, capturing a beautiful shot of a crescent moon between two towers.

FREMONT, CA — Patience is truly a virtue, and it can also lead to some quite wonderful moments being captured.

Praveen Bhatia captured this photo, which he explains why it is "very difficult" to "get right."

"Besides the positioning of the moon, if one were to shoot the moon a day earlier, the brights of the crescent are too bright and the earthshine is not visible," Bhatia told Patch. "If a day late, then the crescent portion is too thin to even see in the sky."

Thanks for sharing this wonderful photo with our readers, Praveen! I especially enjoy the blue hues from the sky and their contrast against the black silhouettes of the moon and the bright moon.

This photo has somewhat of a sci-fi feel to me, as if it were shot for Star Wars or Dune. I also learned what earthshine — the faint, soft glow that lights up the dark part of a crescent moon — is. I also learned it's sometimes referred to as the "Da Vinci Glow."
