Fremont Man, 77, Charged With Murder In Connection With Shooting

A 77-year-old man has been accused of fatally shooting a 34-year-old person in Fremont.

FREMONT, CA — A 77-year-old man was charged with murder after he was arrested in connection with a shooting Tuesday that left one dead in Fremont, police said.

Around 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 40000 block of Lindenwood Street to respond to a "problem." As officers arrived, the incident was upgraded to a shooting, with several callers reporting a man down, according to the Fremont Police Department.

The suspect, Colorado resident Franklin Earl Lynch also called dispatch and told police that he had shot the victim and would await the arrival of officers. He told dispatch that he would relinquish his gun when officers arrived

Lynch was taken into custody after surrendering his gun. Officers and paramedics attempted to render aid to the 34-year-old victim, but they were pronounced dead at 5:32 p.m.

"While investigating this incident, it was determined that a disturbance had occurred between the involved parties and escalated into a shooting," Fremont police officers wrote in a statement. "Lynch provided a limited statement to detectives; however, several witness statements have also been taken."

The department is investigating the case as a homicide but investigators are still trying to determine a motive.
