Fremont Man Vacates Fire Chief Post After Underage Alcohol Bust

Gilroy Interim Fire Chief Roger Bloom resigned as a result an underage alcohol sting.

After being , Gilroy Interim Fire Chief Roger Bloom resigned from his position on Monday.

Gilroy City Administrator Tom Haglund confirmed Bloom's resignation Monday afternoon, three days after Bloom was caught buying alcohol for minors during a sting operation held Friday.

Bloom is a Fremont resident, according to The Gilroy Dispatch.

The operation was conducted by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office and Santa Cruz Police Department throughout Santa Cruz and Live Oak, using a decoy minor approaching adults asking them to purchase alcohol.

According to KSBW, the decoy minor is the son of a Santa Cruz police officer. Bloom, , was cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor and then released. He is expected to be charged with a misdemeanor.

Bloom joined Gilroy Fire after 25 years as a firefighter and chief in Palo Alto, Haglund said. And while he spoke highly of his track record managing fire, Haglund said Bloom's actions on Friday are unacceptable of city employees. 

"I have no idea why he would have done something like this," Haglund said. "But nonetheless, that type of activity is incosistent of someone holding the position of fire chief in the city of Gilroy. It's inconsistent with my expectations of department heads, managers and employees of the city of Gilroy."
