Fremont Residents Complain About Spoofed Police Department Calls

Fraudsters are pretending to call from the police department — including coming up on your phone's Caller ID as Fremont Police.

FREMONT, CA — The Fremont Police Department does not call local businesses or residents to solicit money. That's the message from the department as it hears complaints about solicitation calls.

"Phone scams are on the rise and criminals are faking their phone numbers on the Caller ID," the police department warned this month in a social media post. "They are pretending to be calling from the Fremont Police Department Non-Emergency Line (510) 790-6800! Our officers will never call from the non-emergency line to request for information or to solicit money. If you receive such a call, hang up!"

And it's not just the police department's phone number that shows of up Caller ID, a practice known as spoofing. Fremont Police have a dedicated Scams, Fraud, and Financial Crimes web page that warns, "Do not provide cash payment or any type of money transfers to anyone claiming to be from the Police Department, the City, the County, the Courts, or some type of government official - it's a scam!"
