FREMONT, CA — A domestic violence suspect who was arrested after a two-hour standoff with Fremont police on Sunday was identified by authorities on Monday as 54-year-old James Mecahn of Fremont.

Mecahn was booked at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on suspicion of battery on a spouse, making criminal threats and exhibiting a firearm and then was released on bail, police said.

Officers were called at about 4:35 p.m. to a home on a cul-de-sac in Fremont's Canyon Heights neighborhood, south of state Highway 84, to respond to a report of a domestic disturbance that included criminal threats involving a firearm, according to police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.

A female victim was able to leave the house safely and seek help but the male suspect, later identified as Mecahn, refused to talk to police, Bosques said.

A police SWAT team and police hostage negotiators were brought in, and residents in adjacent houses were told to shelter in place.

About two hours after police arrived, Mecahn walked out with his hands over his head and was safely taken into custody, according to Bosques.

Police obtained a warrant to search the house and recovered the firearm that Mecahn allegedly used, Bosques said.
