Mayor Harrison to Jump Into Pool Fully Clothed at American Swim Academy Grand Opening

The event will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Harrison will cut the ribbon, then make good on a bet he lost with the owner of American Swim Academy last November.

From American Swim Academy:

FREMONT, CA, May 2, 2013 – Last November, Fremont’s Mayor, Bill Harrison made a friendly wager with American Swim Academy owner, Matt Alberti, and this weekend he may regret that decision.  Alberti had started construction on his new swim facility in Fremont and told Harrison that he planned to have it open before the company’s 40 year anniversary in May.  Harrison thought the magnitude of the project was too big to complete, and told Alberti, “If you open before May, I’ll jump into your pool fully clothed at your Grand Opening.”  American Swim Academy is having it’s Grand Opening Celebration this weekend, and Mayor Harrison will be there to officially cut the ribbon, then make good on his bet.

In addition to watching the Mayor make a splash, American Swim Academy is hosting a Family Fun Festival Fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Fremont Education Foundation.  The free event will be held on Saturday, May 4th from 11am to 2pm and will offer game booths and prizes, inflatable jump houses, live entertainment, free giveaways and more.  It all takes place at the brand new American Swim Academy facility located at 4150 Technology Place in Fremont.

“In keeping with our company value of citizenship, we chose to celebrate our 40th Anniversary and Grand Opening event with a fundraiser for the children of our community schools,” said Desiree Mulhearn, Director of American Swim Academy in Fremont.  “We have some wonderful event sponsors, and 100% of all proceeds from the day will go directly to the Fremont Education Foundation.  When asked how she feels about the Mayor jumping into the pool she said, “I can’t believe he’s actually going to do it.  I thought it was a joke!”

All joking aside, American Swim Academy is not just celebrating 40 years of teaching swim lessons.  “Our anniversary honors four decades of lives that were improved, and in many cases literally saved by the skills we have been fortunate enough to teach all these years,” said Alberti.  “Over the years, I have heard many stories from parents of our students who’ve said their child would not be alive today had it not been for what they learned at our school.  I can’t think of anything more important than that.”

In March of this year, American Swim Academy moved from their original location on Blacow Road in Fremont to a brand new, state-of-the-art facility nearly quadrupling their size.  The new location on Technology Place offers two indoor, heated pools, large men’s, women’s and family locker rooms, expansive climate controlled parent viewing areas, advanced filtration system and more.  Tours of the new facility will be available at the event this weekend.  The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with Mayor Harrison will take place at 12pm.
