Melted Cheese Grills Drivers' Nerves On I-680

A truck carrying cheese caught fire on I-680, closing all but the far left lane. Traffic was backed up for miles.

FREMONT, CA — A big rig carrying frozen cheese caught fire on southbound Interstate Highway 680 in Fremont Monday. All lanes were blocked except the far left HOV lane bringing traffic to a standstill through the busy corridor. Northbound traffic was also slow as looky-loos surveyed the scene.

The fire was initially reported at 11:31 a.m. coming from the big rig near the off-ramp to state Highway 262. There were no fire hydrants in the area, forcing the fire department to bring in its own water.

Firefighters put out the blaze by 12:20 p.m., with the trailer partially collapsed in the aftermath of the fire.
