Officer Shot Burglar Who Had Been Fleeing Police: Fremont Authorities

Police released more information about Saturday's officer-involved shooting later Sunday.

FREMONT, CA — A Fremont officer shot a person who was believed to be involved in a series of burglaries and had been fleeing police Saturday night in a residential neighborhood, according to authorities.

Local detectives were helping Bay Area law enforcement agencies apprehend a group tied to vehicle and residential burglaries in the region, police said, adding the group had committed burglaries Saturday in multiple cities and was involved in similar crimes last year in Fremont.

“When detectives attempted to arrest the suspects, a vehicle pursuit was initiated,” police said Sunday in a news release.

“The suspect vehicle was ultimately disabled, and four suspects fled on foot. At approximately 9:45 p.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred in the area of Blacow Road and Mattos Court (near the area of Alta Drive and Racine Avenue, as previously reported).”

The neighborhood where the shooting occurred is residential, just steps from a church and preschool and blocks from two elementary schools.

The person who was shot remained hospitalized Sunday and will need additional care, according to police, who said the officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and later released, while the other three people were arrested on suspicion of burglary.

“This is an active investigation, and we plan to share more details when they become available,” police said in the news release. “No suspects are believed to be outstanding, and we do not believe there is any ongoing public safety threat.”
