Serial Burglar Arrested, Released, Arrested, Released: Police

To stop the spread of coronavirus behind bars, sentences are being cut short and the accused are being released before trials.

FREMONT, CA — A Fremont man described by the Fremont Police Department as a serial burglar was arrested in Fremont and charged with multiple burglaries. He was released from the Alameda County Jail because of coronavirus release rules. He has since been arrested and charged with several South Bay burglaries that occurred after his release. The Santa Clara County Jail also released him because of coronavirus release rules.

The accused man is 34-year-old Kristopher Sylvester of Fremont. Police believe that Sylvester burglarized a Hertz car rental business on Fremont Boulevard, and the following schools:

  • 3/13/20: Mission Elementary School
  • 3/16 - 3/18/20: Glankler Early Learning Center
  • 3/20/20: Walters Jr High
  • 3/24/20: Centerville Jr High
  • 3/24/20: American High School
  • 3/27/20: Brier Elementary School
  • 3/27/20: Centerville Jr High
  • 3/28/20: Brier Elementary School
  • 3/28/20: Kennedy High School

Charges include committing a burglary during a state of emergency, possession of stolen property, possession of a loaded firearm, felony evading, and a probation violation. Fremont Police arrested him on April 2, and he was released on 7th.

According to Fremont Police, "During the early morning hours of April 13th, a Hertz car rental in San Jose was burglarized with approximately 60 vehicle keys being stolen. The suspects managed to steal approximately 23 vehicles from the lot. Later that morning, Milpitas PD responded to an auto burglary in their city with the suspect vehicle being one of the stolen vehicles from Hertz.

"Prior to fleeing the scene, the suspects left behind 2 cash registers that were stolen from a burglary in Palo Alto earlier in the day. Surveillance video was recovered and Fremont PD Detectives were able to identify Sylvester as one of the suspects."

Three days later, Santa Clara Police responded to several burglaries and located a suspect vehicle, another one of the stolen vehicles from Hertz, which fled from officers. The vehicle later crashed. Sylvester was arrested along with 32-year-old Jacob Mauck of Fremont. Both face charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, felony evading, committing a crime during a state of emergency, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, and a probation violation.

That same day, Milpitas Police recovered 2 more of the stolen Hertz vehicles. Both of the suspects, 27-year-old Cody Ward and 35-year-old Jana Cornehl, are Fremont residents.

Fremont patrol officers have also recovered several of the stolen Hertz vehicles within the past few days.

All four have been released from jail and, according to Fremont Police, "All four subjects have significant criminal history in Alameda County." Prior arrests include being a felon in possession of a firearm, burglary, possession of drugs, identity theft, possession of stolen vehicles, felony evading, assault with a deadly weapon, battery causing significant injury, robbery, grand theft, and possession of counterfeit checks.
