I-880 Reopens Following Flooding

The freeway was shut down in both directions for several hours Monday snarling the morning commute.

FREMONT, CA — Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-880 in Fremont between Mowry and Thornton avenues have reopened. They were closed for hours because of flooding.

Northbound lanes reopened around 6 a.m. Southbound lanes remained closed through the morning commute, with traffic backed-up all the way to Hayward. They reopened before 9 a.m., hours before Caltrans projected.

At one point, the water was up to three feet deep.

There have been no reports of injuries.

In addition, Niles Canyon was closed Sunday night because of a landslide that blocked the road.

Localized flooding and multiple crashes were also been reported on I-680. There were three vehicles down an embankment at Scott Creek Road.

Traffic around the Bay Area has been impacted by the atmospheric river that dropped historic rainfall on Sunday. Rain showers are continuing throughout the day Monday.
