Standoff Suspect Doused Himself With Toxic Chemical: Police

The Fremont standoff started Tuesday when the suspect allegedly assaulted his father.

FREMONT, CA — An assault suspect involved in a standoff with police Tuesday allegedly doused himself with a toxic chemical before he was taken into custody, police said.

At 10:48 a.m., officers responded to Quintana Court because a man allegedly violently assaulted his father and left the scene in his father's car. The father suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening,
police said.

Officers searched for the suspect in the area of Mill Creek Road and soon found the father's car. With help from a California Highway Patrol aircraft, they located the suspect at 1:45 p.m. down in a heavily wooded
area, police said.

According to police, the man allegedly barricaded himself and told officers that he doused himself with a toxic chemical.

After a three-hour standoff, the suspect climbed out of the wooded area and surrendered. He was arrested and is receiving a mental health evaluation. His name is not being released at this time, police said.

Police and Fremont Fire Department hazardous materials teams responded and decontaminated the area, police said.

The case is under investigation to determine whether the felony assault was caused by a mental health issue, police said.
