1. Fresno County looks to improve upon fire protection ops (midvalleytimes.com) — Fresno County leaders are weighing major changes to how fire and emergency services are coordinated across most of the county, including areas surrounding Fresno. A new 300-page analysis urges clearer countywide oversight, unified contracts, and measurable response-time goals for the Fresno County Fire Protection District. Supervisors have asked staff to bring back an action plan so improvements can start rolling out. 
2. Fresno Unified literacy goals missed by more than 5%, superintendent says (fresnoland.org) — Fresno Unified's latest iReady results show first-grade literacy progress falling 5.3% short of this spring's target, even as officials say they're still on track toward 2030 goals. Trustees also reviewed millions in Prop. 28 arts funding, heard parents' pesticide concerns near Fresno schools, and got a plea to replace a 55-year-old HVAC system at Rowell Elementary's library.
3. Little Lights Childcare Center opens in Fresno to support women in recovery and their children (abc30.com) — A new Little Lights Childcare Center on Fulton Street is opening to support Fresno mothers recovering from addiction while keeping their children in a safe, nurturing environment. As an expansion of The Lighthouse Recovery Center, the two-story home will offer housing, childcare, and bonding-focused support, with services expected to begin by mid-September.
4. Fresno City Council approves tobacco retailer license aimed at curbing illegal sales (abc30.com) — Fresno's City Council has approved a new tobacco retailer licensing program that will require about 550 local shops to obtain a roughly $1,000 annual license and undergo compliance checks. Supporters say it targets illegal and flavored products and youth access, while some small business owners worry about costs as the ordinance takes effect within months.
5. No parents show to comment on Fresno Unified field trip cuts at school board meeting (yourcentralvalley.com) — Fresno Unified's recent $2.2 million cut to field trip funding, affecting about 40,000 students' visits to places like the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Big Fresno Fair, drew no parents to the first school board meeting afterward. Despite the empty boardroom, thousands have signed a Fresno Teachers' Association petition, and families are being urged to attend the Sept. 9 board meeting.
