1. A $1,000 bet becomes part of Fresno Chinatown's future (fscollegian.com) — A long-ago $1,000 bet helped inspire Chef Paul's Cafe, now a beloved Southern restaurant anchoring Fresno's often-overlooked Chinatown alongside longtime staple Central Fish Company. The story traces Chinatown's multicultural roots, the families and entrepreneurs keeping it alive, and how younger Fresnans—especially students—could rediscover the neighborhood as high-speed rail construction reshapes its future.
   

2. New northwest Fresno park may be named after Central Valley political 'trailblazer' (fresnobee.com) — A new park planned at Veterans Boulevard and Barstow Avenue in northwest Fresno may be named for former Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante, a longtime Central Valley political figure with deep Fresno ties. Councilmember Mike Karbassi will bring the naming resolution to the City Council on Thursday, and more community input meetings are expected as designers refine amenities like walking paths, play areas, and a veterans memorial.
   

3. Fresno County's Better Road tax lawsuit get third judge assigned (fresnoland.org) — Fresno County's lawsuit over the Better Roads, Safe Streets transportation tax has now been assigned a third judge, Jonathan Skiles, just as the trial is set to begin. The case will determine whether the countywide transportation tax appears on the November ballot, with major implications for local transportation funding and what voters see when they vote.
   

4. Housing Watch: Beyond Housing Foundation once again taking applications (abc30.com) — Low- and moderate-income Fresno families can now apply again for up to $10,000 in down payment assistance through the Beyond Housing Foundation. Aimed at households around 80% of area median income, the program helped 35 families buy homes last year and focuses on economic mobility for residents moving off housing assistance. Interested buyers can work directly with their lender or realtor to get started.
   

5. Structure fire breaks out and displaces 5 in Fresno, officials say (yourcentralvalley.com) — Five people were displaced after a Monday afternoon apartment fire on South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fresno, but firefighters say no one was hurt. Crews attacked the blaze from multiple sides and quickly contained damage to three units. If you live nearby, expect lingering recovery work as residents and the property owner deal with the aftermath.
