GLENDORA, CA -- A man was expected to survive being shot by police in Glendora after a reported barricade situation and entry by SWAT officers, the sheriff's department said Monday.

The officer-involved-shooting happened about 2:35 p.m. Sunday at a house in the 700 block of West Bagnall Street, Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez said.

Glendora police officers arrived at the residence at about 9:45 a.m. on a report of a suicidal man armed with a handgun.

"Upon arrival the officers established telephonic communication with the suspect and attempted to get him to safely exit his residence, Navarro- Suarez said. The suspect refused and a short time later the sound of a gunshot was heard coming from the residence.

Officers sent a small mechanical device with a camera into the residence to check on the man's welfare, she said. The suspect located the device and threw it out of the residence."

Officers and the suspect's relatives tried to convince him not to hurt himself and to come out of the residence unarmed but the suspect refused, Navarro-Suarez said.

"Ultimately the suspect stepped out onto a second-story balcony and aimed an assault weapon at a GPD officer, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred," she said. The suspect was wounded. An assault rifle and a semi-automatic handgun were recovered.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Navarro-Suarez said.

Although the man was shot by Glendora police, the OIS investigation was being handled by the sheriff's homicide detectives, according to Navarro- Suarez.
