Local Artist Portrays Multiple Deaf Characters in Half Moon Bay Show

An independent deaf-blind man, a deaf prostitute, a man awaiting trial for murder, and a psychologist who serves as an advocate, interpreter and chauffeur for her clients will all make an appearance in Half Moon Bay later this month during "Deaf Poets Society," a one-woman show written and performed by Montara artist .

Before moving to the Coastside, Margulies worked in art therapy for many years with deaf individuals in the state prisons of Illinois and Missouri. "Deaf Poets Society" is based on what she learned during that time.

In addition to getting an inside glimpse into the lives of these individuals, audience members will receive a lesson in sign language street slang as well.

El Granada improv theater professional Ann Swanberg will open for Margulies with a comedic summation of the decades of personal growth that she's experienced throughout her life.

"It's a parody of a motivational seminar," she said.

Swanberg's routine originated from a tongue-in-cheek booklet she wrote for friends about how to achieve personal growth.

"I wrote it spontaneously and my friends loved it," she said. "There was lots of laughter."

Audience members, Margulies said, should prepare to be enthralled.

"The characters combine for a most unusual evening of theater," Margulies said. "You'll step into a world you never dreamed existed."

"Deaf Poets Society" will be performed at the from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at 777 Miramontes Ave. in Half Moon Bay. Tickets are $12 in advance and can be purchased here. The performance will benefit .
