Two Chabot College sprinters added exclamation points to their fine Gladiator careers at the 3C2A State Track and Field Championships on recently at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
The Gladiators’ Nyarah Anderson-Brown turned back a familiar foe in earning a state championship in the women’s 200 meters in a personal-record time of 23.46 seconds, and was second in the 100 in a PR of 11.50.
Chabot’s Jamal Perry stunned the SoCal crowd by winning a state title in the men’s 100, in 10.35, just off his PR of 10.34 when he took first at the NorCal meet.
Chabot’s Cameron Jones, competing with a bruised heel, still managed to take fifth in the men’s triple jump, at 48 feet, .75 inches.
Chabot head coach Dooney Jones will long remember the dramatic statement wins by Perry and Anderson-Brown
He paints a picture of the men’s 100.
“Just as the men were lining up for the 100 meters, all of the stadium was yelling and screaming for their guys, mainly the Mt. SAC sprinter (Marques Guzman).
“When the gun went off, and for about 50 meters, the noise continued. However, after that, I was clear Jamal was in command of the race. … He flew by the crowd to the finish line. The railing was cleared. It was as though no one was even there. He stunned all of So. Cal! It was great!!!”
Ryan Mann of San Diego Mesa was second in 10.47.
In the women’s 200, Anderson-Brown was also magnificent, upsetting Modesto 100 champion Shaylan Roy-Williams
“Nyarah had just finished second in the 100 meters, and her 200 meters was inspiring,” Jones shared. “The girl from Modesto had been beating her all year. She, Nyarah, came off the curve with purpose. She gained an extra gear that the field didn’t have. She held it to the end.”
