After 26 Seasons, Russian River Adventures May Take Final Paddle

HEALDSBURG, CA — For more than two decades, kayaks have slipped into the Russian River carrying families, friends, first-time paddlers, and plenty of dogs on adventures launched by Russian River Adventures.

Now, after 26 seasons and more than 125,000 paddlers, the owner is preparing to send his last kayaks down the river.

"This is my last season," Larry Laba said in a video, inviting paddlers back for an outing before he is ready to "paddle into retirement."

Russian River Adventures began guiding trips in 2001, turning a love of the river into a business that would become part of summer for generations of visitors to the Healdsburg area.

Over the years, the river trips became more than a way to spend a warm afternoon on the water. Families returned year after year, children grew up paddling the same stretch with their parents, and four-legged passengers became such a familiar sight that dogs remain welcome aboard during the company's final trips.

"What began as a dream grew into 26 incredible seasons filled with laughter, family traditions, wagging tails, and unforgettable memories," according to the company's retirement announcement.

"We are grateful for each and every one of you," Laba said.

The season marks the end of a career measured not only in paddlers served, but also in the traditions customers created along the river.

Laba's final season is moving quickly, and Russian River Adventures is encouraging anyone hoping to make another trip — or take a first and final one — to get on the water before the company closes.

Laba said that if he does not find the right buyer, the business will close permanently.

"We would love to see you all come down the river one final time," Laba said.
