Cats Have Special Needs, Too

While the City of Healdsburg awaits approval from the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors for an extended contract with Animal Care and Control,  expected June 25, animal lovers have been looking for positive news.

Former HAS vet Darryl Roberts, who quit in November 2012, has been trying to find a positive path out for the disappointing experience, according to Ann Carranza in towns.pressdemocrat.com.

He's created SNAP Cats, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and care of special needs cats. The acronym stands for Special Needs Are Precious Cats.

Special needs cats? ""Cats that have debilitating conditions or are blind, malnourished, aged or FIV-positive are just the cats Roberts wants to shelter," Carranza tells us.

Roberts became aware of the problem while working at HAS, and took an interest in finding homes for them. Now he wants to build a shelter.

He’s currently waiting for a decision on his bid to rent the “little grange hall” at 9161 Star Road in Windsor. He envisions the building becoming a rescue facility and sanctuary for those special needs cats. ...

The building is “perfect,” he says, just what he imagined. It has a large room that could be the communal room, plus the potential to add a therapy pool and an indoor-outdoor area. The outdoor area would require a permit to fence it to keep the cats corralled.

It's not just a case of if he builds it, they will come. Roberts is well aware that he'll have to "work through the shelter system to find cats needing his help." These include Forgotten Felines, the Sonoma County Humane Society and Sonoma County Animal Care and Control.

“I invite the community to become involved,” said Roberts. He is now accepting donations on his website.
