HEALDSBURG (CA) – The Wonder League of Healdsburg got off to a great start on opening day May 14.  For Game 2 on May 21, the Healdsburg High School Baseball Team joined the Wonder League players as “buddies,” assisting each player to bring out his/her best and generally have a fun time.  Some of the Healdsburg players will return for future games, and the Healdsburg HS Girls Softball Team will be “buddies” at the Saturday, May 28, game.

Games are played each Saturday starting at 1:30 through June 11.  Play lasts until about 3 PM.  The Wonder League Field is located at Foss Creek Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Avenue.  All area children ages four to nineteen are welcome.

The Wonder League is a program of the Healdsburg Rotary Sunrise Club.  It provides an opportunity for children with special needs to play baseball! The Wonder League has garnered support from Wells Fargo Bank, Big John’s Market, and Exchange Bank.

Each child is given an opportunity to hit the ball and to score a run during each inning. Wonder League team members are assigned buddies who assist them in hitting the ball and “running” the bases. Buddies can be anyone who wishes to volunteer their time to give a child the gift of baseball.  Rotarians from both the Sunrise and Noon Clubs provide buddy and off-the-field support to participants and their families.

We cannot change or cure the medical issues life has dealt children with disabilities.  What we can do is provide them with an opportunity to experience the joy and benefits that come from playing our national pastime—baseball.  Come be a part of the Wonder of Baseball in the making.

For information about how your child can participate in The Healdsburg Wonder League, please contact Sunrise Rotary at (707) 433-8477 or the Healdsburg Community Center at (707) 431-3301.  Or e-mail at HBWonderLeague@gmail.com.
