HHS Softball Season About To Begin

Healdsburg High Girl's Softball Team Ready for 2011 Season.

Coach Brian Osborn is beginning his seventh season as Girl’s Varsity Softball Coach at and hasn’t let the recent rain detract from preparing for the home opener against Drake High on Friday Feb. 25th at 4 p.m.

They have been practicing in the gym but hope that this week will get them back on the diamond.  The team is returning 10 players from last year with pitching duties being handled by first year varsity sophomore, Mikayla Froom.

Healdsburg teams always have to practice hard and play their best since they are one of only two Division IV teams in the Sonoma County League.  In fact, the softball team's 24-game season includes 16 games with schools much larger than the Hounds and 6 of those schools have enrollment twice the size of the Healdsburg.

“Leading up to the playoffs, I have to remind the North Coast Section that two-thirds of our games are with larger schools," Osborn notes.  "We don’t want to be forgotten.”

Ed. note: This is the first "From the Field" column by veteran Healdsburg High School administrator, teacher and sports announcer Richard Bugarske. Bugarske will be filing future columns as commentary after home games and during the various sports seasons.
