Mystery Of Human Remains Found On Sonoma County Beach Solved In Decades-Old Case

Genetic genealogy confirms bone found on a beach years ago belonged to a local man.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A long-standing mystery involving human remains found on a Sonoma County beach has finally been resolved, officials announced Thursday.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the DNA Doe Project and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, the remains — initially found in 2022 — have been identified as Walter Karl Kinney, a former Santa Rosa resident who disappeared in 1999.

The identification of Salmon Creek John Doe as the 59-year-old Kinney brings closure to a unique cold case. Kinney had already been partially identified, once back in 2003, when remains found near Bodega Bay in 1999 were confirmed to be his using X-ray records, officials said. The recent discovery of a bone, possibly a tibia and containing surgical hardware, on Salmon Creek State Beach on June 17, 2022, led to the second identification.

“This case was unusual. It’s not often we see someone end up as a John Doe twice,” said Traci Onders, DNA Doe Project team leader. “But thanks to investigative genetic genealogy, we were able to resolve this mystery and provide some answers to everyone involved in this case.”

A family searching for seashells made the initial discovery. After searching the area and finding no further remains, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office brought the case to the DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit, volunteer organization that seeks to identify unidentified deceased persons using forensic genealogy.. The organization’s investigative genetic genealogists were able to develop a DNA profile.

The profile was uploaded to a database in January 2026 and a team of volunteers quickly zeroed in on a family who had moved to California from the East Coast. Following the descendants of this family, the team discovered Walter Karl Kinney, born in 1940 in San Diego, who had later moved to Santa Rosa, close to the discovery site.

A crucial breakthrough came when investigators found an article about partial human remains washing ashore in nearby Bodega Bay in 1999. Those remains were confirmed as Kinney's in 2003 after his daughter came forward. After identifying Kinney as a strong candidate in just eight days, the DNA Doe Project presented the lead to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, who confirmed the identity.
