Air over Healdsburg:

Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- Looks like the Press Democrat just got wind of the new movie theater being planned for downtown Healdsburg. The paper reports that the Alexander Valley Film Society (aka AVFilm) is currently "in negotiations to lease a two-story building once used as a movie theater in the 300 block of Healdsburg Avenue, near Healdsburg Plaza" and are trying to raise another $1.5 million from donors by next February. If all goes well, they say they're hoping to open the Plaza Cinema Center off North Street "in time to take advantage of summer 2023 film releases" — including "both first-run films and art films." More from the story: "Healdsburg hasn't had a movie theater since the closure of the Raven Film Center in 2020. Plans for the Plaza Cinema Center call for the creation of three movie auditoriums on the first floor, with a classroom, offices and meeting spaces on the second floor. 'We envision this as a project to serve all of northern Sonoma County,' [Kathryn Hecht, executive director of AVFilm] said. ... Alfonso Felder, executive vice president for administration of the San Francisco Giants, will serve as volunteer project leader for the Healdsburg cinema project, Hecht said." - County ag officials just released their annual crop report for 2021 — and overall, it's looking a whole lot prettier than the one for 2020. The reported value of all the crops collected across the county was more than $811 million last year, officials say — a nearly 20 percent increase over the $681 million in crops collected the year prior. The 2021 numbers, however, are still much lower than the ones we were seeing before the pandemic: Past reports show the county's total crop haul was worth around $959 million in 2019 and a whopping $1.1 billion in 2018. And while crops like wine grapes and nursery plants saw huge growth last year, others — including apples, wool, livestock and poultry — took a big hit, reportedly due to market and environmental factors. "The 2021 report highlights the water challenges faced by producers, including widespread shortages that in some cases require reducing operations, turning to alternative sources, and changing cultural practices," says James Gore, Healdsburg's rep on the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. "We need to recognize the hardships of adaptation to drought, climate change, and the ongoing threat of natural disaster, as we work to support a diverse and thriving agricultural industry in Sonoma County." You can read the full report here. (Sonoma County Government & County of Sonoma via Facebook)
- Did you know Dolly Parton is planning to launch a kids reading program across California next summer, with the help of state politicians? It will basically allow any child under the age of five to get a free book in the mail each month. The program is called "Dolly Parton's Imagination Library" — and the pilot is happening right now, right here in Healdsburg. You can sign up through the Rotary Club of Healdsburg, which is serving as the program's local affiliate. According to the Imagination Library website, almost 100 parents have signed up their kids through our rotary club already. It says the guy to contact if you want to take part is Don Mitchell at (707) 953-7786 or dmitch@sonic.net. So get on that! (Dolly Parton's Imagination Library & Press Democrat; paywall)
