The deputy released the dog, which bit Azbill in the shoulder and buttocks as Azbill thrashed around on the ground, sheriff's officials said.
The sheriff's office's helicopter Henry-1, a State Parks officer, a Cal Fire crew and California Highway Patrol officer also responded to the incident in the remote area of the county.
Azbill refused to let the Cal Fire crew treat the dog bites and he was placed in maximum restraints. He was taken to a hospital, medically cleared early this morning and was booked into Sonoma County Jail on
suspicion of violating probation and resisting arrest, sheriff's officials said.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Sonoma County Superior Court.
