UPDATE: Contractors Almost Ready to Pour Foundation for Shed

With 52 pilings now installed, contractors are tentatively planning to pour foundation on Jan. 13.

After installing 52 helical (like giant screws) pilings 40 feet deep into the soil next to Foss Creek, contractors are almost ready to pour a concrete foundation for on North Street nearestaurant.

"We have a heck of a lot of rebar in there, because the soils are so bad," Tim Miller, project superintendent for general contractor Oliver & Co., said Friday. "A report said that in a 7.0 (magnitude) earthquake, it would drop five feet."

In addition to the 52 helical pilings and masses of metal rebar, workers on Friday will install slab rebar to provide added support for the building's foundation. Miller said the foundation is tentatively set for pouring on Jan. 13.

Miller said the two-story for local fruits and vegetables, is now scheduled to be done by late summer 2012.

Shed's first floor, which opens on North Street, will have a coffee bar, a meats and cheeses counter, a wine bar with seating and several retail shops. An elevator will be installed for access to the second floor, he said.
