Upcoming AAUW Courses Address Rock, R&B Music & Climate Change
Registration is open for the spring speaker series hosted by the Healdsburg branch of the American Association of University Women.
HEALDSBURG, CA — Registration is open for the spring forum series sponsored by the Healdsburg American Association of University Women (AAUW). The upcoming topics are: Great Voices: An In-Depth Look at Six Iconic Rock and R&B Singers; and Climate Change and Civilization: Our Legacy to Future Generations.
The two, six-week sessions are held at the Raven Performing Arts Theater in Healdsburg.
The Great Voices course runs 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Thursdays, March 19 to April 23, and each week will cover the lives and careers of six legendary rock and R&B singers from the period 1955-75: Ray Charles; Sam Cooke; Tina Turner; Roy Orbison; Bonnie Raitt; and Aretha Franklin.

Instructor and professional musician Pete Elman will sing, play piano and guitar and will perform various musical genres to accompany each class.
Over his career, Elman has worked as a keyboardist, trombonist, guitarist, bassist, arranger, composer,studio musician, recording artist, producer and school teacher. He also has performed and recorded with country star Lacy. J. Dalton, Grammy-winning writer/producer Rick Nowels (Stevie Nicks, Madonna, Celine Dion), and Tom Johnston (Doobie Brothers), plus composed, arranged and produced music for film, TV, commercials and recording artists.

The Climate Change and Civilization course will be Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-11:45 a.m. from March 17 to April 21. The sessions will address how climate change has affected the emergence and longevity of various civilizations in both positive and negative ways. This course will provide participants with the most recent evidence of the climate crisis, as well as weekly insights and examples conveying hope about the future.
It will be taught by Tyra Benoit, who holds a master's degree in history and has taught about world civilizations for more than 4o years. After retiring in 2019, her concern for the survival of her own civilization led her to the Climate Reality Project, and she currently is a member of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps. Each of the six-course sessions will provide participants with hopeful examples about what can be done to address the climate emergency, organizers said.
