Woman Struck, Killed Walking On U.S. 101 In Cloverdale: CHP

The pedestrian "stepped directly in the path of the BMW and was fatally struck," an official with the California Highway Patrol said.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — U.S. Highway 101 has reopened in Cloverdale following the death late Sunday night of a Santa Rosa woman who was walking across southbound freeway lanes when she was struck by a car, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said. The fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision happened at about 11:20 p.m. on southbound U.S. 101 just south of Cloverdale Boulevard South, CHP Officer Jonathan Sloat said.

As fire and CHP personnel arrived on scene, they found a pedestrian — a 57-year-old female Santa Rosa resident — deceased in the roadway.

Authorities closed southbound 101 at Cloverdale Blvd. S., diverting traffic onto Dutcher Creek Road while the incident was investigated.

Southbound lanes remained closed for some six-and-half hours, until 6 a.m. Monday.

CHP preliminarily determined that the pedestrian, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of 101 from the center divider when she was struck by a 1995 BMW 525i, Sloat said.

CHP believes the BMW sedan, driven by a 21-year-old Ukiah man, was going about 70 mph in the No. 1 lane when the woman "stepped directly in the path of the BMW and was fatally struck," Sloat said.

Officers determined the BMW driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Sloat said neither the driver nor his four passengers were injured.

"Officers could not locate any vehicle associated with the pedestrian," Sloat said.

Anyone with information regarding the fatal collision or the vehicle/s involved was asked to call the Santa Rosa Area CHP Office at 707-588-1400.
