📰 News we're reading

• Some Riverside County transportation projects closer to actuality with new Traffic Relief Plan (pressenterprise.com) — Hemet-area residents could eventually see expanded rail service directly into Hemet and San Jacinto, along with more buses and freeway improvements, under Riverside County’s Traffic Relief Plan. The long-term proposal outlines over $30 billion in projects countywide, and officials are still deciding how to fund them while gathering public input through webinars and town halls.

• RivCo Bard to Host Hearing on Fire Mitigation Charges for Vineyard Fire Hazards (mynewsla.com) — Riverside County is moving toward placing fire-mitigation charges on tax bills for several vineyard and orchard owners in unincorporated areas near Hemet, Murrieta and Perris after clearing dangerous weeds at county expense. A July 14 Board of Supervisors hearing will let those owners contest the proposed tax liens, which stem from the Fire Hazard Reduction Program’s 2025 work.

• Highway 74 fully shut down after deadly shooting east of Anza (kesq.com) — A deadly shooting shut down Highway 74 between Palm Desert and SR-371, forcing all traffic to detour either via SR-243 or up through Hemet for much of Tuesday night into early Wednesday. Drivers with urgent reasons to access the closed stretch are urged to call authorities, while CHP continues investigating the incident involving a tow truck and two other vehicles.
