Deputies Kill Kidnapping Suspect Following Hours-Long Standoff

A man wanted in a kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon case who was holed up inside a residence in an unincorporated section of East Los Angeles was shot and killed by deputies when he allegedly threatened them with a handgun, according to the sheriff's department.

The kidnapping and assault incident took place Saturday, March 19, near Rowan Avenue and Cesar Chavez Boulevard, according to the department.

The drama began around 10 a.m. Wednesday, when deputies from the East L.A. station tried arrest the unnamed suspect. Instead the man ran and barricaded himself inside a residence in the 6400 block of Northside Drive, according to Deputy Lisa Jansen.

The people who were inside the location at that time managed to evacuate safely, Jansen said.

A call for assistance from a Special Weapons Team from the sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau and the K-9 unit was made by the deputies on scene, Jansen added.

Those units responded and set up a perimeter around the location and completed evacuation of surround residents. Crisis negotiators also were called in, according to Jansen. But the suspect refused to surrender.

About 3:25 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect came holding a handgun and allegedly threatened sheriff's personnel on scene. At that time a deputy- involved-shooting took place, Jansen continued. The suspect was hit by several rounds in the chest.

He was treated at the scene and transported to L.A County-USC Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Jansen said. It's unclear if a gun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect's name was not released pending notification of kin.

Ther fatal DIS was being investigated by the sheriff's homicide and internal affairs bureaus, the county's Office of Inspector General, the sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee and Los Angeles County District Attorney's Justice System Integrity Division shooting team.
