Such terrific talents under one roof makes for magical, magnificent, mind blowing memories. The final number, Respect, hits it out of the ball park, a home run, the piece de resistance.
Tom DeTrinis, who plays Nigel (Miranda Priestley’s Right Hand Man) and the Editor of the Newspaper, takes total command of the stage whenever he appears.
Tom’s mere presence exudes confidence and strength. The crowd goes wild with his dynamic dancing, spot on impressions, and ingenious improvs.
DeTrinis wows the audience during “Man in the Mirror,” with several full piroettes, transforming every single person in the room to a state of jubilation.
Tom’s favorite piece is "the Supermodel number because RuPaul is a Magical human, and I love hearing Ru’s voice in my head when we perform it.”
Acting is Tom’s current focus and passion. He admits, however, “Catch me on a day when I’m coming out of a dance class or singing Whitney Houston in my car and THAT is my forte, but today...acting WINS!”
DeTrinis credits some wonderful professors and directors from the University of Buffalo, where he earned a degree in musical theatre, for helping “shape his performance brain.”
Inspired by his love of musicals and cartoons from a very young age, Tom became motivated to pursue a career in entertainment. “You can learn a lot about comedic timing from old cartoons like Bugs Bunny....well, once you look past all the racism…”
Tom believes that musical parody is powerful because “music AND laughter bring people together.”
“When you watch someone mocking an iconic moment from a movie live in your face and you add musical elements on top of that, it really ignites the energy in the room and people start to bond in an interesting way.”
“You realize when you laugh that everyone has been thinking the same thing about that moment when they watched the movie.”
DeTrinis is back at Rockwell for the second time, having starred last year in the musical parody of Clueless. He feels that the proximity of the actors and audience participation are huge factors in raising the bar.
“People are forced to go along for the ride. One of my favorite parts is that you can pause the show for a good minute or two to play with someone who is having a blast.”
DeTrinis describes working with the cast and crew on this show as “JOY plus HAPPINESS plus EASY plus MAGIC plus LAUGHTER…It has been a real pleasure.”
Tom’s words of wisdom to aspiring artists are: “Keep your eyes on your own paper and remember that no one is giving you a grade except yourself.”
DeTrinis runs a celebrated theater company along with the talented Brooke Seguin, which produces parody musicals, called “30 Minute Musicals.”
Basically, they take cult classic movies, add in original music, cut them down to 30 minutes and perform them live.
Over the past five years, Tom and Co. have produced over 15 musical parodies from Showgirls to Jurassic Park to Independence Day.
0pening at the Celebration Theatre on March 6 is Tom’s Fav Top Gun. For tix and more info go to www.30mm.com.
