I’ve found, like almost anything else, it’s all about routine. The girls and I started when they were in kindergarten with them eating a variety of healthy foods they enjoyed – they knew that they only had these to choose from.
They tended toward cold low sugar cereal in the warmer months (Cheerios mostly) and juice, or a bagel with cream cheese and juice, or to hot cereal in the colder months (they loved oatmeal or Cream of Wheat).
I also made sure that they knew that on special days they got a special breakfast – on big test days, or when something like straight A’s happened, etc., they got whatever they wanted for breakfast (leaned toward pancake/bacon or eggs/bacon). Yes, I had to get up early to do it, but it didn’t happen frequently and it let them know I cared about their education and wanted the best for them.
