IB Bike Polo

Nightriders on fixed-gear bicycles wield mallets while chasing a small black ball in the low lit parking lot on Seacoast Boulevard at Palm Avenue.

With an eye on the goal, steering with one arm, the ball-carrying player cups the ball with a long-handled mallet, "skimming it across the floor" as he dodges opponent's bikes.

Riders haven't played a game since August, due to disagreements among players, but bike polo could return to IB in the future, according to player Josh.

Booboo passes to Foreskin as Big Bertha and Jeteye try to "box him in." They surround the player in possession of the ball, taunt his silly nickname, and/or force him to stop his bike, put a foot down, or pass the ball.

Without a lot of respectful and skillful riding, the game could turn into a demolitoin derby of broken spokes and mallets.

Riders and bicycles rarely make contact to avoid injury and damage.

The players are a mix of teens and young adults having good clean fun on a Friday night. Women are welcome, though none have shown up.
