Imperial Beach Unemployment Rate Stays High

Unemployment in IB has remained above 16 percent in 2011, second worst in San Diego County.

According to preliminary California Employment Development Department statistics released Friday, Imperial Beach had an unemployment rate of 16.2 percent in August, or the same rate for IB as it had in March 2011.

The City of San Diego and San Diego County both have an unemployment rate of 10.2 percent in August. For the county, the August rate is down from 10.6 percent in July and lower than the 10.7
percent recorded in the same period in 2010.

The Imperial Beach unemployment rate has remained above 10 percent since July 2008.

For cities nearby, Coronado has an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent and Chula Vista has an unemployment rate of 11.8 percent.

National City has the highest unemployment rate in the county at 19.3 percent.

Valley Center and Del Mar had the lowest rates of unemployment in San Diego County in August, at 5 and 5.3 percent respectively.

These numbers are not seasonally adjusted.

California's jobless rate was 11.9 percent in August, down from 12.4
percent in July and also lower than the 12.5 percent recorded in August of last year, the EDD said.
