The two Imperial Beach Little League teams faced off Wednesday evening to decide who would finish the year in first place. Closing Day is Saturday at 10 a.m.

In the two teams’ final game of the season, in a bout for first place, the Padres beat the Brewers 6-4.

After a 4-0 start by the Padres, Brewers Catcher Danny Brians hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to tie the game. Majors division Little League games are six innings.

Pitcher Jake Borst knocked in two runs in the sixth to win the game for the Padres.

Both teams are in the Majors division of the Imperial Beach Little League with players from 10 to 12 years old.

The game was played to completion, but Brewers manager Rick Wilson protested the final result since two substitutions were made to bring in Jake Borst and a third baseman before six consecutive outs and one at bat, a violation of Little League rules.

“I brought a kid in before that happened,” said Padres manager Mark Borst, Jake’s father. “So did it change the outcome of the game? I don’t think so, but rules are rules.”

“I've never protested a game before,” said Wilson, who has been a team manager with the IBLL for five years. “The only way for those kids to legally re-enter the game was if we went seven innings.”

IBLL President Don Spicer decided the game would be replayed Thursday from the point of the infraction in the fifth inning, but then it was agreed upon between Spicer and the two team managers that the game would not be replayed, and there would no first place team this year.

“Because of our Closing Day and we’re getting ready for All-Stars and Tournament of Champions so both managers decided for the kids to call it a draw,” Spicer said.

“No champions. Everyone’s a winner,” Wilson said.
