The loss to rival Southwest means the team may keep the team of six from winning the South Bay league championship and keep them out of the playoffs.

After scoring the first goal, fortunes turned against the Mar Vista Mariners roller hockey team Tuesday as they lost to Southwest High School Tuesday 9-1 at Skate San Diego in National City.

The second period concluded with the game still in reach but the Raiders started to run away with the win early in the third period, quickly scoring two goals.

"We picked a day to have a bad game," said coach Ryan Scott, a teacher at Mar Vista. Scott has been with the team for five years. This is his first season as head coach.

With five skaters and a goalie, it doesn't help that the Mariners are half the size of the Raiders roster, Scott said.

Tuesday's loss may have knocked the Mariners out of the South Bay league championship and possibly the playoffs, but at 11-4, this season is a big improvement on last season's 11-12 record and one of the teams best records ever, Scott said.

Hunter Calef continues to lead San Diego County scorers with 64 goals and 15 assists. Andrew Medlock, Jacob David and Jordan Robinette are also among the top 25 offensive players countywide.

"Jesus Grihalva is also starting to play well and score a lot of goals," Scott said.

Southwest is 2-1 against Mar Vista this season. The two teams will face each other again in the final game of the season Feb. 13.
