School Attendance Declines in Face of Tsunami

Attendance for South Bay Union School District schools was 12 percent below its average Friday, possibly due in part to fears of a tsunami.

Attendance at preschools and elementary schools was 12 percent below its average Friday, as several parents may have decided to keep their children home from school in fear of a tsunami's arrival around 8:45 a.m.

On a typical day, attendance is around 95 percent, but Friday fell to to 83 percent, said Amy Cooper with the SBUSD.

District officials said they received several calls Friday morning from concerned parents.
