Man Who Fatally Shot Bar Patron Sentenced To 18 Years In Prison

A man who fatally shot another patron during a fight at a South Bay bar more than 12 years ago was sentenced Thursday.

CHULA VISTA, CA – A man who fatally shot another patron during a fight at a South Bay bar more than 12 years ago was sentenced Thursday to 18 years in state prison.

Guillermo Gonzalez Nunez, 44, pleaded guilty in August to voluntary manslaughter in the April 3, 2006, killing of 54-year-old Willie Clark Jr. Gonzalez also pleaded guilty to assault with a semi-automatic weapon on a second victim.

Deputy District Attorney Victor Ou said there was no definitive motive for the shooting.

After the shooting at the La Vuelta bar on Hollister Street in Palm City, Gonzalez fled to Mexico and was on the run for more than 10 years until he was arrested and returned to the United States to face murder and other charges in May 2016.

Murder and attempted murder charges were dismissed as part of the plea bargain.
