The Effectiveness of Participation in Non 12-Step groups among Dual-Diagnosed Persons
The effectiveness of participation in Non 12-Step groups among dual-diagnosed persons has received little empirical attention.

A large percentage of individuals are dual-diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder and a substance use disorder. Such persons typically face more difficulties and have poorer outcomes than do single disorder substance users. Among noncomorbid substance users, treatment and participation in Non 12-Step groups have been shown to enhance the likelihood of abstinence from substance misuse. Specialized Non 12-Step based fellowships have recently emerged to address the recovery needs of dual-diagnosed persons. The present study is a longitudinal investigation of the effect of such Non 12-Step program based groups on abstinence among dual-diagnosed persons.
Participation in treatment has been associated with reduction in substance use and improvements in other areas of functioning among dual-diagnosed persons. It is generally believed that the duration of services for such clients should be extensive as “experience with dual diagnosed patients supports the need for a long-term perspective”.
