LAGUNA BEACH, CA — New signs across Laguna Beach have gotten the world talking. The city's mask requirement as "law" has left many to question that statement. Still, the city government maintains that it's their town and their rules.

Laguna Beach has been consistent with its mask policies since the coronavirus pandemic shutdowns began in March. As summer arrived, the city's large gatherings such as Pageant of the Masters shut down, and Promenade on Forest Avenue opened up. Along with it, the pledge that all who stroll its open streets, outdoor shops, and restaurants need to cover up unless you were seated at a parklet and eating. For may who have visited, this was not the case, Patch was told.

Last weekend the city made changes and posted the placards for all to see.

"The mask orders issued by the Governor and the Orange County Health Officer have the effect of law," they wrote.

What if you don't have a mask when you arrive in Laguna Beach?

Don't worry. Someone is sure to hand you one.

City employees were out and about last weekend, handing free masks to people in need. Not wearing a mask could cost you as much as $1000.

Signs posted on the beach have sparked some outrage among visitors, as posted on the city's facebook page:

Another visitor shared her opinions on seeing the signs and how people responded to them as an act of beauty.

Still, Laguna Beach isn't looking to rake in the dough. They are more interested in spreading fact over fiction and educating visitors on how masks can help stop the spread of coronavirus.

"Though you can be issued a citation for not wearing a mask, that is not our first choice," the city wrote. "We are approaching the mask requirement from an education standpoint and by offering free masks — we want your voluntary compliance and to keep Laguna Beach safe."
