Chronic Tacos—Fresh and Fast Mexican Food

This was such a busy week at our house, that there was no time for any leisurely dining. Given that we were in a hurry, we decided to go to one of our kids’ favorite spots,

Located at 34255 Pacific Coast Highway, it is kind of a deluxe taco stand and is decorated that way. The walls are covered with corrugated metal and murals of the beach, with a couple of sombreros thrown in for good measure. There are a few tables on the inside and a fairly large area for patio dining, as well. Customers place their orders at the counter from the menu posted on the wall.

Choices include burritos, fatty tacos (which refers to the size of the taco), tortas (talera bread filled with meat, beans, veggies, guacamole and salsa), tostada bowls, nachos and quesadillas, and Chronic Favorites. Most menu items can be prepared with carne asada, pollo asada, carnitas, al pastor (spicy pork with pineapple and onions), and battered fish or shrimp. There are even breakfast items, which are prepared with eggs, potatoes, and your choice of meat.

It was dinnertime for us, so I ordered a tostada bowl with carne asada and Jim went with the enchilada meal. The girl working behind the counter, assembled my bowl with all my favorite toppings, and then made two chicken enchiladas to order with tortillas, which she filled with meat and rolled, then topped with sauce and cheese. She heated them in a contraption, almost like a panini maker, except it did not flatten them. We both thought this was a clever and quick way to prepare fresh enchiladas. They were served with rice, beans, chips and a soda. They also offer beer, bottled and on tap.

Our food was ready in a flash and we found a table. Everything tasted fresh, and I enjoyed all of the vegetables that were added to the tostada bowl. The guacamole was delicious, but a little salty. This was my husband’s first visit to Chronic Tacos, and he loved every bite of his meal.

During our visit, there were lots of families picking up orders to go on the way home from soccer practice and other activities. It is a busy, popular spot.
