Killer Whales Spotted Off OC Coast In New Sighting: Video

DANA POINT, CA — Another orca sighting off the coast of Southern California has marine enthusiasts hurrying to the coast for a chance at seeing the rare apex predator.

Travelers abroad a private charter on Dana Wharf Whale Watching's Lot'A Fun were treated to the sight late Thursday afternoon, where the pod of orcas was spotted over 10 miles southwest of the Dana Point Harbor.

Dana Wharf COO Donna Kalez told Patch that killer whales, known also as eastern tropical pacific orcas, are fast swimmers and "very boat friendly."

"The orcas would sometimes swim directly at us, crossing our bow and diving under our vessel numerous times," Kalez said.

"It was truly a once in a lifetime encounter for many of our passengers — especially those who have never seen a killer whale in the wild," she said.

Kalez said that the tour stayed with the pod until sunset, watching as the creatures slowly traveled down the coast.
