Rare Masked Booby Sighting, Birdwatchers' Delight In Dana Point
While on the Reel Fun Dana Wharf sportfishing vessel, bird watchers cried "fowl!"

DANA POINT, CA — It wasn't just a fisherman's tale of the one that got away. On Thursday, Dana Wharf Sportfishing Captain Frank Brennan captured more than a fish. Brennan, who typically also spots dolphins and whales with Dana Wharf Whale Watching noticed a bird he maybe recognized as a Nazca or Masked Booby bird.
"This is bird is not seen often in our area," Donna Kalez told Patch. "Brennan snapped a picture and took a video of the bird to share with the team."
Local bird expert Robin Lowe confirmed the fowl as a Nazca Booby.

"The team was super excited because today was going to be the 2nd of a series of Bird watching trips we are running and today the group located another Nazca Booby this time on the break water and to our surprise its a totally different one," Kalez said.
Two Nazcas were seen in two days, she explained. Local bird experts Bernardo Alps, and Robin Lowe were on board to explain all the birds that we see in the area.
