Coroner IDs Man Who Crashed On I-15 In Lake Elsinore

Mark Gaylord, 64, of Fontana suffered "a cardiovascular event" Wednesday that led to the wreck and his death a short time later.

LAKE ELSINORE, CA — A 64-year-old man who crashed on Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore Wednesday afternoon was apparently suffering a "cardiovascular event" that led to the wreck and his death a short time later, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Mark Gaylord of Fontana was driving northbound on the interstate, north of Railroad Canyon Road, shortly after 4:30 p.m. when the medical emergency occurred.

Alone in a 2006 Chevrolet utility truck, Gaylord was estimated to be traveling at about 45 mph when he drifted into the dirt center divider, back into northbound lanes, and then again into the center divider where he crashed into a concrete barrier, the CHP reported.

The truck suffered minimal damage but Gaylord was unresponsive, according to the CHP.

Gaylord was rushed to Loma Linda University Medical Center in Murrieta, where he died at 5:52 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's Bureau.
